Eligibility

To apply for the internship, the following criteria must be met:

  • You will complete entry-level coursework at an AMTA-approved music therapy program within the next 12 months (or have recently graduated)

  • UCSF has an established affiliation with your college or university, OR there is an affiliation in progress. If you do not know the answer to this, ask your academic program director.

Welcome to one of the few pediatric music therapy internships in California, located in the vibrant and culturally rich city of San Francisco. Our program offers a comprehensive and well-rounded experience, designed to equip you with versatile skills that can be applied across diverse populations. Under the supervision of seasoned professionals, you will have the opportunity to immerse yourself in a supportive hospital environment where the value of music therapy is deeply respected and appreciated. UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital San Francisco is a state-of-the-art medical facility that serves as a beacon of hope and healing for thousands of children in the Bay Area each year. As part of the UCSF Medical Center, one of the top-10 ranked hospitals in the United States, we are deeply committed to delivering excellent and compassionate care.

Our music therapy services extend across all inpatient units, including Pediatric Intensive Care, Cardiology, General Medical/Surgical and Transitional Care, Hematology/Oncology, Bone Marrow Transplant, and the Intensive Care Nursery. Our music therapists are not just visitors, but integral members of the interdisciplinary treatment teams, playing a crucial role in the holistic care of our patients.

As an intern in our music therapy program, which is nestled within Child Life Services, you won't just be an observer, but an active contributor to the Child Life team. This department is a vibrant hub that also encompasses the hospital school program, art therapy, and the TV studio. As an intern, you'll have the opportunity to collaborate and learn from a diverse range of medical professionals, including physicians, nurses, physical therapists, occupational therapists, speech therapists, psychologists, social workers, and chaplains. This is more than an internship - it's an opportunity to become part of a community dedicated to transforming lives through compassionate, innovative care.

Upcoming Internship Cycles and Due Dates:

January 2025: Applications due April 26, 2024 Extended to May 10, 2024
June 2025: Applications due October 18, 2024

Announcement: The January 2024 internship cycle will include a meal card plan, valued at ~$17 per day, allowing the purchase of meals and select groceries at the UCSF cafeteria and a few other participating restaurants. This is a pilot program and, while we hope it continues, we cannot yet guarantee it will be available to interns beginning in June 2025 or later.
