Learn More About Music Therapy
What is music therapy?? This is a question we are asked daily. Below are some facts to help you learn more about the field that we are a part of:
Music therapists work in more than just children’s hospitals. They can work in assisted living facilities, schools, prisons, outpatient mental health clinics and with many other populations.
All music therapists have a degree in music therapy, complete a full-time 6-month internship, and pass a board certification exam.
We are both musicians and therapists! One part of our training includes specific musical skills, including facilitating improvisation, group music making experiences and how to continually adjust and adapt music to increase relaxation or decrease pain. We are also trained in counseling techniques, and ways to support people verbally.
There are multiple music therapy journals. Music therapy research has also been published in medical and nursing journals. Exciting new research is showing how music therapy can have significant physiological effects on the body and mind.
Music therapy is not a new field and has been around since the early 1900’s. Currently, there are over 9,000 board certified music therapists in the US and abroad.
