Sound Health Network Launch

It’s not uncommon to feel inspired while walking the UCSF campus. We typically post about our talented and inspiring patients. We share stories about the important ways that creative arts therapies have helped patients heal. A visitor to this website doesn’t need to scroll the blog roll for very long before finding something that is emotionally moving.

A curious mind will read these stories and ask, “well, why does that work?”

The underlying mechanisms are an important part of the equation, and one that we are trained to consider. Our practice is evidence-based, which means it is grounded in research. There are several music therapy research journals, and part of our job is to stay up to date on the research in our field and related fields.

That brings us to an exciting new development for music therapists and researchers everywhere.

UCSF has partnered with the National Endowment for the Arts, the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts to launch the Sound Health Network. The team consists of several UCSF faculty and researchers, and we couldn’t be more excited to be under the roof.

“The Sound Health Network aims to promote research and public awareness about the impact of music on health and wellness.”

The project celebrated its launch just a few days ago, and the virtual event can be viewed below. While I enjoyed all of it, I think my favorite part was the conversation between Esperanza Spalding and Dr. Charles Limb (begins at 27:55).
