In the hospital, it’s easy for our routines to go out the window. One thing that many kids and grownups enjoy outside of the hospital is listening to music. With so much going on, it’s easy to forget about listening to music while inside the hospital.

Did you know that researchers have identified a ton of benefits to music listening? How will you use music to feel better during your hospital stay? If you need help finding tunes for these activities, ask Music Therapy. Or ask your friends, nurses, or doctors for recommendations!

RELAX
If you’re feeling tense, anxious, or in need of a nap, try listening to music that helps you feel more relaxed. Some people find that music without words and without sudden louds and softs is better for relaxation. Need some ideas? Search YouTube, Apple Music, or Spotify for playlists featuring soothing guitar, relaxing piano, or even playlists labeled for sleep, relaxation, or meditation.

MOVE
Music inspires movement! If it’s safe for you to do so (ask your nurse if you aren’t sure), play music in your room and have a dance party. Dancing is a great way to get some exercise and boost your mood! Want a challenge? See who else you can get to dance with you!

JOURNEY
Feeling restless? In need of adventure? Combining music with your powerful imagination will let you leave the hospital without going anywhere at all! While listening to music, imagine being somewhere relaxing, interesting, mysterious, or exciting. Where will your imagination take you?

EXPRESS YOURSELF
Do you play an instrument? Or do you want to learn? In some cases, the Music Therapy team can provide you with an instrument to play while you are in the hospital. Music is a great way to express yourself and the many feelings you might experience.

GO TO A CONCERT
Ok, we know it might not be possible right now to leave the hospital. BUT, you can find so many live performances on YouTube. See if you can find videos of your favorite bands, singers, or instrumentalists in concert! The TinyDesk series from NPR is a great place to start, if you need some ideas.

MAKE CUSTOM PLAYLISTS
You have great taste in music. Try making custom playlists for different activities or feelings. Can you make a breakfast playlist? Sure! Or a playlist for walking the halls? You bet! Or how about one for when you’re feeling happy … or sad … or excited … or inspired? There are so many options!
